365 Things to Do in Etobicoke

I came across a great web site called 365 Things to Do in Etobicoke! Here's an example:

It’s typically around Earth Day that we think about the environment and look around the house during Spring cleaning to find those items that can be reused or recycled. The fact of the matter is that the environment should always be on our minds, 365 days of the year.
This Saturday, Councillor Peter Milczyn is holding a Community Environment Day in the Stonegate Plaza. Here you will be able to drop off any old computer equipment and peripherals; household waste such as cleaning supplies, batteries, and paint; and any gas-powered equipment no longer being used. They will also be accepting donated items such as art supplies and books for school use. Sporting goods such as skates and jerseys are needed as well as any clothing. Non-perishable food items will be donated to a food bank. You can also pick up free leaf compost for your garden. You may also purchase at extremely low prices backyard composters, green bins, and rain barrels.
Support Peter Milczyn’s Community Environment Day and do your part to keep the city of Etobicoke the greenest community in the GTA.

WHERE: Stonegate Plaza, 150 Berry Road (just east of Park Lawn)
WHEN: Saturday August 21, 2010, 10am – 2pm
WEBSITE: Councillor Peter Milczyn’s Flyer and Livegreen Toronto

Remember to “Like” this item on our Facebook page if you in fact, do like it. This will determine the top 10 things to do in Etobicoke.

Waistline Survival Tips For Summer BBQ Season

As the summer weather comes along, so does a lot of social gatherings and food consumption! Here are some tips on how you can keep your waistline from expanding:

  1. Drink lots of water! Stay hydrated. Feeling thirsty means you are already feeling the effects of dehydration. A lot of people misunderstand their body and think they are hungry when in fact they are dehydrated. Pop/coffee/tea don't count!
  2. Stick to the lean proteins (ie. Chicken, pork tenderloin) instead of some of the more fat filled options (ie. Sausages, hot dogs, burgers).
  3. If you’re going the burger route, go homemade. Skip the boxes in the frozen food aisle and get some lean ground beef (or try ground chicken or turkey). It only takes a few minutes to prepare. They are tastier and much better for you.
  4. “Go Bunless”. A great way to save on calories is to skip the bun.
  5. Load up on the veggies! Think about doing vegetable skewers on the BBQ. They are easy, tasty and a great way to increase your vegetable intake. (just be careful of your marinade)
  6. Bring on the summer salads. Put together a great baby spinach salad with loads of colourful veggies thrown in. Stay away from the mayonnaise heavy potato salads, macaroni salads, coleslaws, etc. They can pack a ton of calories in only a few forkfuls.
  7. Be choosy about beverages. A lot of people sabotage their weight loss by what they drink. If you have water in one hand, you'll drink less of the other stuff!
  8. Stay away from the chip bowl! If there are foods on the table to snack on, take your conversation somewhere else. If the temptation is there, you'll eat them.
Summer is a great time to get out and enjoy the company of family and friends. Be sure to enjoy yourself while not de-railing your goals.

Nearer Than You Think - By Donna-Jean Brown

If you’ve ever driven through the Rockies or seen the expansive view from anywhere on the Niagara Escarpment, you know the feeling. There’s something magic about nature. In Algonquin Park or at the Bay of Fundy, you breathe more deeply and your heart soars. Back in the big city, we dream of those awesome moments in nature and wish our travels were never-ending.

Well, maybe you’ll laugh when I mention Mimico Creek in the same breath, but that’s okay. I am discovering that Nature’s pick-me-ups are nearer than we think.

Although I have lived near the creek for years, only recently did I start walking the hilly, sometimes precarious, trail through the scruffy bush that lines it. The short path runs for about one kilometre, broken midway by a parkette at the west end of Berry Rd.

Algonquin it ain’t, but the small oasis of undergrowth, with its few old trees and ancient waterway give just enough taste of the wild to lift my spirit. In the cold of January the creek offers natural ice-sculptures and chickadee calls. When spring arrives, the sound of running water, and a first glimpse of wildflowers in the scrub, would encourage any winter-worn city dweller. Examining the intricate shale wall that towers over the creek, feeling sunshine and wind on my face, these can make my day any time of year.

I want to keep looking around more carefully; paying attention to what’s nearby instead of wishing for mountains and ocean beaches. With the right attitude, even watching manic Toronto squirrels playing tag around an oak tree can give you hope. And if you live in Toronto, I know there’s a creek or river not too far from your house.

Donna-Jean is a native Torontonian and some-time writer, who finds life continually surprising.

10 Easy Ways to Cut Calories Everyday

Losing weight is a numbers game!  We all know that you have to burn more calories than you take in.  The challenge becomes how to consume less.  Sometimes, it may be easier then you might think.

    1. Choose fruit instead of juice.  A medium apple is approx. 70 calories.  A cup of apple juice is 115 calories.  Juice can also have added sugar and has less nutritional value.  (Calories recovered:  45)

    2. Say no to pop!  The average can of pop contains 160 calories, is loaded with sugar and has zero nutritional value.  Try water instead and add flavour by putting in slices of fruit.  (Calories recovered:  160)
    3. Wrap vs. Bagel:  Instead of going for a calorie heavy bagel (can clock in anywhere from 210 – 350 calories) try having a wrap instead (110 – 130 calories).   (Calories recovered:  100-220)
    4. Go Light!  Choose light versions of mayonnaise.  It can save you up to 50 calories for every tablespoon.  (Calories recovered:  50)
    5. Check the nuts!  Make sure you measure out nuts before you eat them.  They are packed with calories.  One ounce of nuts (between 15 – 25 nuts) can be worth 200 calories.
    6. Put off the pasta.  Try taking ¼ cup less of pasta.  (Calories recovered:  50-60)
    7. Go Chicken!  Try having 4 oz of chicken breast instead of 4 oz of steak.  You’ll save in calories and over 8 grams of fat.  (Calories recovered:  65)
    8. Have a glass of wine.  Choose a 4 oz glass of wine instead of a 12 oz beer.  (Calories recovered:  50)
    9. Say Yes to Halloween Chocolate!  If you have a craving for chocolate, try having a Halloween size bar (approx. 70 – 110 calories) instead of the full size (190 – 250).  (Calories recovered:  80 – 180)
    10. Season to Taste.  Use herbs and spices instead of butter or margarine to add flavour to your vegetables.  (Calories recovered:  100 per tablespoon)
It doesn’t take a lot of effort to save calories.  You need to be diligent and making many small changes can add up to saving a lot of calories.

If motivation is your challenge, find a friend who will join you. Schedule a time to meet and workout. Another option is to hire a personal trainer who will meet you at the park and provide you with a challenging outdoor program. If working out in a group is more your style, outdoor boot camps are also a great way get in shape.

      It's About More than Weight

How many times have you said or heard “I need to lose weight”. It’s ingrained in us that weight is equal to healthy. The reality is being healthy and feeling good about yourself is about a lot more than just weight.

Weight is important, but it isn’t the only factor in being healthy. Unfortunately, we’re conditioned to see “success” only by a number on a scale and not from a variety of other very important areas.

When you embark on an exercise and/or healthy eating diet, take stock of more than just your starting weight. Take as many different measurements as you can.

      1. Body Measurements – take measurements on specific parts of your body:
        a. Waist
        b. Hips
        c. Thighs
        d. Chest/Bust
      2. Body Fat % - many scales have body fat % functionality. While the actual number may not be entirely accurate, the downward (or upward) trend of it will be true.
      3. Energy Level – easily marked by a scale of 1 – 10 (10 being the highest)
      4. Sleep Quality – mark by a scale
      5. Mood – are you generally feeling positive or negative
      6. Self-Esteem – do you like who/what you are?
      7. Fitness Testing – do as many push ups or sit ups as you can in a minute

Make sure that you allow 4 – 6 weeks before you take your measurements again.

If you are feeling more positive, you have more energy, you’re down in inches and body fat, don’t let the number on the scale erase all of those strides. Be sure to celebrate all the successes that you have accomplished.

Remember: If you’re out with friends and you’re glowing because you feel great, they are not going know if the scale was up or down 5 lbs. They just know that you look and feel your best!
